I've been reading a little bit of YA recently and I've begun to notice that the protagonists and friends always hold to modern Western (which usually means American) ideals and the antagonists are always Bad Guysâ„¢.
For instance, the good guys of any YA story are inevitably going to think slavery is evil, try to avoid killing (even if the people they'd be killing are rapists and murderers acting against the Crown), are "fair" in all their dealings and generally stick to their word, and are always accepting of someone who is drastically different from them (i.e. of a different skin colour when there's extremely racism or someone who is LGBT in a time and setting that is canonically discriminatory against them) unless that character is destined to side with the bad guys. Also they tend to be attractive, or at least "homely". When was the last time a good guy inna YA series was described as looking like they are kittens for breakfast?
Meanwhile, the antagonists are all beating their slaves, discriminating against people based on their race/gender/orientation, ruling through fear, commanding really incompetent minions and just generally looking like they enjoy kicking puppies.
Are there any YA series that actually manage to have actual characters on both sides as opposed to stereotypes?
