I've started reading Glen Cook's Dread Empire in the last few days, and I can't get over how sympathetic everyone is. Until the last part of the first book, I even thought that all the characters were positively nice compared to his usual books.
Now, I'm only two books into the series, so there's still time for a large number of unsympathetic characters to pop up, but so far I've been pleasantly surprised by the characters (except for Alana, who was much better in the first book).
So now I'm wondering, has anyone else experienced something like this, where an author pleasantly surprises you in a way you didn't expect?
