I've kind of burned through my KU lists, so I've been checking out stuff outside of my normal interests. Sigler's, the Crypt, was exactly that, but turned out to be a fun read.
It follows a crew of criminals, misfits, and the assorted riffraff of a far future universe, as they traverse the galaxy and engage in cosmic warfare and espionage. The big draw here, is that they do so while inside what seems to be a living ship of alien.. manufacture? birth?.
The characters, and there's quite a few of them for such a short book, range from idealistic volunteers, to grizzled soldiers that may have engaged in a small bit of extra-curricular murder, to sailors just railroaded by a system that needs bodies for its black-ops programs. They're surprisingly nuanced, with even the worst of them being multi-dimensional, just like their ship.
The titular ship travels through space by breaking through to another dimension, which causes psychosis, hallucinations, and worse as the sailors traverse through the 'mud'. I was hoping for a more 'horrific' take (Event Horizon, WH40k), but it comes off as more weird than anything else. If a sequel happens, I'm hoping we get an explanation of what the ship is, where it originates from, and what the other dimension actually is.
I really hope the author follows up with a sequel, the ending was solid, and left me eager for more from a genre I rarely indulge in.
