I am a Glen Cook fanboy. The Black Company is my favorite fantasy series of all time, and the Garret PI series is fantastic as well. So I recently got an omnibus of the first three Dread Empire books and...

... I'm not loving them. I finished book 1, and have started book 2 and I feel like I don't really have a good idea of what the story is here. I'd love to hear folks thoughts on the series. Does it start to gel soon? Is my current somewhat confused opinion a common one, and if I just stick with it all comes into focus?
