What is your opinion on original characters for fanfiction?

I’ve done fanfics centering on characters from a series before (Ichigo in Bleach or Emiya in Fate) but as time has gone on, I realize I can have more fun using an original character and not get restrained by keeping a character in character.
Not to mention use an outside perspective and make it interesting.
