On the topic of hatred in fan fiction
Post Body

Note, this is a discussion about the topic of hatred in fan fiction and not about hating fics, writers, or fandoms.

Hatred is a funny thing. How many people can say they’ve really hated someone? People can live their whole lives without ever really finding someone to hate the way they love a spouse, friend, or family member.

A lot of fics I read that have hate do so in way of enemies to lovers and while it’s a fun guilty pleasure I feel as though the core of what it is to hate isn’t scratched as much as it could be. When you hate someone, you think about how great it would be for them to be unhappy. Little things to make them miserable. You want so badly for their goals to crumble and fail.

A great example would be Anakin hating Obi Wan in those final moments before being burned to a crisp. In that moment he hated someone he had loved for years. And that hate festered into becoming something Obi Wan would have hated to see.

I’d love to see more fics about hatred because in a way it really is a lot like shopping in reverse. You think about each other, you pine over the next time you get to wrap your hands around their neck until they cease to move. They motivate you to get of bed and be your worst self.

How have you written about hatred? What’s your favorite fic that deals with hatred? What should you call a hate pairing for a fic? An anti ship? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
