Someone commented on my fic saying they enjoy my writing and would like to translate it into Chinese. They were very polite and I appreciate them asking first, but I have a few concerns. One is that it's a guest comment, so I can't look at their AO3 profile to see if they've posted other translations and generally get a feel for their vibe or if they're shady.
The other is that I can't read Chinese and when I Google some of my fics, sometimes Chinese websites pop up so I'm assuming someone has already taken some of them and translated them without asking me. I would prefer for the translated fic to be posted on AO3 and linked as a translation to the original fic, rather than posted on another site.
Is it okay for me to only give permission if the translation stays on AO3? I suppose there's nothing stopping them from just taking it and posting it elsewhere anyway, but since they asked first I hope they would respect any boundary I set. I would prefer to have a more detailed conversation about this, but obviously there's no PM feature on AO3 (which I generally think is a good thing) and I don't want to seem weird by asking them to contact me on Tumblr or Discord, as I would have to give out my info on a public comment.
Thanks for any insight!
