This might be fandom and story-type dependent, so I acknowledge the answers are probably varied. So here’s some background to my question.
I’m a big fan of slow stories. I find stories that jump into big action sequences or plots right off the bat to be a bit jarring. I admit that I also hate when stories finish on a big climactic bang and then abruptly end with no denouement to wrap things up. I love development and when an author really makes the world and story come alive with little details and slow builds.
I don’t even mean slow burn romance specifically. I do enjoy that, but in general fics I like a slow build as well.
I’m writing a story that will turn into a big adventure story. No romantic pairings. And I’m really working on building up the relationship between my characters before they have to go on a big adventure. It’s not a friendship and probably never will be given the characters’ affiliations, but it will be a grudging partnership between two of the three and an unusual mentorship between two of the three. It’s taken me a lot of chapters to build up the first relationship (the mentor one) and introduce what will become the partnership.
I got a comment that someone was not happy about how slow it’s going.
I don’t mind the comment. Not everyone likes a slow build. So what about you all? Do slow builds work in your fandoms/stories or are they not very popular?
