Question about Fanfic etiquette?

Post Body

There is a fanfic that I read that I absolutely adored the idea of and was super well done, but the author stopped after the second chapter and hasn't updated it in years. My current project is about to come to an end and I've thought several times about trying my hands at a Rewrite/continuation/spiritual successor (idk what to call it) of that authors fic. I know when you publish a work there is a box to tic if you are making a work based on another authors work. My question is if this is an acceptable practice ig? I'm relatively new to the writing side of fandom and I don't want to step on any toes. Ive received mixed advice from friends and thought id ask here.
