Asking because I've played quite a few video games in which lots of Americans were using one or another variant of the Aвтомат Калашникова, including Fallouts 1, 2 and 3, although I'm not sure if F3 counts since these weapons were supposedly smuggled in by the Chinese sympathizers and as such weren't in civilian hands; do correct me if I'm wrong about this, though.
Anyway, a non-American and non-gun enthusiast like me thought that US citizens have plenty enough guns made by their own or at least more West-friendly manufacturers and wouldn't want to use the weapon of "dirty reds", especially not in the Fallout universe. I can sort of understand AK's popularity in the real world US because, well, these are good guns and many people might not care whether or not they're Russian, but seeing so many of them in Fallout's supposedly ultra-capitalist, anti-communist US is odd. You'd think we'd rather be given M4s or something else that's more American.
So, back to the point; do you see many AK owners in the US? And why do you think there'd be so many of them in the fictional setting of Fallout?

This is just true. A combination of sanctions against some of the exporters and dwindling supply of Cold War stockpile surplus has whittled down the supply of a lot of old combloc stuff.
