It's pretty fair to say that The Kintsugi Kid is my favorite song from SM(F)S and I think it's because it's so deeply relatable to anyone that struggles with mental illness or addiction.

I'm pretty sure as far as humans go / I am a hard, hard pill to swallow / and I know I'm not your intended dose

Being mentally ill, someone who struggles with addiction or both this lyric hits, because we feel this way, we feel burdensome and hard to take.

on the bright side, got the wrong insides

I want this lyric on my skin, there's this profoundly unique feeling that comes with realizing that what's "wrong" with you is both out of your control and not your fault. It's relief that you're just broken and the devastation because you're just broken.

This song is realistic and sad but so hopeful. It gives us as the listeners permission to find beauty and purpose in our brokenness and to find ways to express it without hiding it behind a curtain.

As a Swemo and a swiftie I can't help but think of Taylor Swift's song Mirrorball, a song about how as a society we love broken people, we hold them up under shiny lights and ask them to entertain us, we revel in their brokenness as long as they shine for us but what about when the lights are off and they're no longer shiny? What do we do with broken people once the lights go down?
