Spoilers for CS4, specifically mcburns/campy's final dialogue and the final ng scene
I've had a big theory craft in my brain recently after replaying CS3 and CS4. Just wanna throw the idea out there and see if people buy into it.
First, I'm making the jrpg assumption that we are gonna fight some form of god or hyper power'd deity by the end of the series.
Now let's get to the theory shall we!
First what we know:
Campy specifically mentions dropping the sept terrians "in this possible world" in his final dialogue with the group. He also states that ouroboros acts more like an observer, when it comes to sept-terrians.
Mcburn had a human form in Zemuria and a devil form from the beyond, that was able to fuse together to create who he is (with no memories until the fight that is). He also says that campy got him good, that ouroboros is a fitting name, and takes a journey of discovery (that campy believes its too late for).
The grandmaster based on the final ng cutscene basically planned everything from the start. Everything that has occurred she has permitted or set into motion.
So now my theory:
The beyond is the combined timelines of Zemuria's that fail. The end of their worlds become part of the beyond, and probably distort into it. Mcburn mentions that he's half human, with a human self in Zemuria and a beyond self, this would indicate that the beyond self was from an alternate timeline/future. One where he becomes a devil beast, I guess. The drug gnosis releases the shackles of users from the world, in this case, it temporarily gives them the powers of their beyond counter-part selves.
So essentially Ouroboros wants to save A Zemuria, by their last action in each world being to send their memories back to a time where they can stop whatever calamity that ended the universe. They observe what humans do with the sept terrians, if the humans end the world they press the reset button at that moment and meddle. I do not believe that the timeline they left gets completely erased, however, I still think it gets engulfed in the beyond. Hence the term Ouroboros, they sacrifice each world they failed in to get more knowledge to prevent them from failing again. The reason why I don't think they try to make too many changes is because Zemuria is on a knife's edge of being sent to the beyond and they only wanna meddle when they absolutely have to. I don't think most of them retain their memories, Mcburn being a possible enforcer exception. Probably only Campanella and the Grandmaster, tho the Anguis probably gets as many memories as it takes for them to be completely loyal. This could also explain why many enforcers (Joshua, Renne, Sharon, etc.) quit the society in general, grandmaster pulling strings because she genuinely cares about them as if she's spent enough lifetimes with them to really wanna change them for the better and put them in a timeline where they are most happiest.
This power to send memories back in time could also be related to the power stopping people from traveling beyond a certain point in Zemuria. As I believe this is Ouroboros' doing.
As for McBurns backstory, I believe he bargained Campy or the grandmaster for a second chance in another possible world. They agreed, but he didn't read the fine print that his memories would be locked from him. Now that he has them he's on a journey of self-discovery, as he cannot go home and must find a new identity in this one. The reason why McBurn is a calamity and not the grandmaster or campy is because they only send their memories from the beyond to Zemuria, not their body or soul. This could explain why the grandmaster refers to herself as a shadow--a shadow of her former self.
The salt pale disaster is the weakest link in this theory, it could be that the salt pale is necessary for something in the future, or it could have been a leak from the beyond that ouroboros couldn't stop with their powers. If I had to assume its backstory, one Zemuria fell completely to the salt pale. Hence why it is in the beyond.
The beyond itself is being controlled/lead by a corrupt deity of some sort. Hence the jrpg final anime showdown being them. I would assume ouroboros would also like to stop this diety from consuming more timelines.
Anyway, hope you enjoyed my theory! Feel free to call it 100% wrong, I feel like it's already too much of a stretch. The logic fits, I think, but introducing time travel/groundhog day shenanigans might be too much.
