Just would like to say I had no intention of telling anyone about this at the time I did it, but it's made me feel so amazing today that I thought I'd share my story to encourage others to do the same.
Last night I went out with my brother for a night out in a nearby city, I had hotel, meal, and drink expenses. It was our mum's birthday today so I popped round to give her some flowers and a present.
On the way home I called in to the local corner shop, (convenience store) and as I walked in the door noticed a lad about 18 - 19 yo stood at the checkout on his phone. As I grabbed what I wanted and walked towards the checkout I heard him say "I'm sorry, I've checked my account, I can't afford both bottles of water".
This lad was well spoken, he had a rucksack and a skateboard which I assumed was his next to him. He struck me as the kind of person that maybe didn't fit in too well when he was in school and I felt a bit sorry for him.
He left the skateboard and I carried on as usual thinking maybe it wasn't his when he awkwardly came back in saying "Sorry, I left my skateboard".
I had just finished paying at the checkout and was walking out behind him. I started thinking to myself, I've just been out and blown £150 on one night out, and this lad can't afford a couple bottles of water on a summer afternoon skateboarding...
He walked the same direction as me so I gave him a shout and handed him a £5 note, he looked at me confused and I told him that I had just heard him in the shop. The look on his face I'll remember forever, he thanked me and told me to have a good day. And I really did, purely because I gave him that money. I knew the money wouldn't be wasted and I had helped a stranger out.
Times are hard for everyone at the minute, and I understand some people will be taking advantage of that. But if you genuinely feel like someone could use some help, and you can afford it, help them out. You won't regret it, real karma is better than reddit karma.
