My boyfriend's character reset?

I asked in the mega thread, but didn't seem to get a response. We were playing multiplayer last night & I stepped away for a moment while my boyfriend proceeded to play. My PC ended up falling asleep after 15 minutes and it kicked my boyfriend. Once he rejoined, his character was not the character he made & all of his levels were base with no upgraded equipment or progression... is this a known issue or are we missing something?
Any help would be greatly appreciated !
