Server Reset Discussion thread
Post Body

Seeing how you need a wordpress account to comment on the server poll, I figured we should start a discussion thread on the topic. What better place to discuss the reddit server than on reddit?

Summary

The new hardware will more than double the speed per core (~2.2GHz to 5.0GHz) and Quadruple the ram (16Gb to 64Gb). AKA, about the best hardware you can get for a MC server.

Options being looked at:

  • Start a new server on new hardware (and leave this running on old)

  • Move this server to new hardware (and run new server on old?)

A map reset/new map will not update the modpack, it will still be running on MC1.4.7.

Regardless of the reset, the map will be reset for the next recommended FTB update.

Also, the admins are looking for feedback. The results of the poll are only going to be part of their final decision. So please voice your opinion.

Discussion

First off, I would like to point out that the poll on alienmc.co is bullshit; anyone who knows what cookies are can vote multiple times. Second, its open to anyone: members, newbies, and even 4chan. Third, it doesn't highlight that regardless of a reset this weekend, the map will be reset for the next update (coming out this month). That means that if we reset the map this weekend, it might be around for as little as a month before its reset again.

I vote for keeping the current map and moving it to new hardware. The only merit to starting a new map is tickthreading, which works best when its installed from day 1. Everything else can be changed or tested on the current map with little to no issues. Running two servers with the exact same mod pack is a bad idea. It will end up with two outcomes: the community is fragmented until 1.6, or everyone will migrate to one of the servers anyway. Then the map will be reset again for 1.6.

We don't even know how well the new hardware will run this map. I'm willing to bet the performance tweaks from a reset will help, but what if its insignificant? There's no way to compare because for the first few weeks the new map will be nowhere near the progression on this one. So, following in the same footsteps of the beta for this server, everyone will think the servers running great until either enough people progress far enough to cause issues, or everyone merges back together for the 1.6 reset. This might not be the case, but we don't know if tick threading will solve all of our problems. What I'm saying is, if we start a new map on the new hardware, we won't know for several weeks if the server is running smoother then this map will on the same hardware. And sometime around then, we will be resetting the map with tick threading for 1.6 anyway. In my opinion, its not worth a map reset for the possibility of a few weeks with a unknown TPS increase.

What I think should be done, is the server should be moved over to the new hardware and tested. I'm sure the majority of players will be excited to help stress test the current map on new hardware. Look at removing MCPC, or at least factorization (its buggy as shit due to MCPC). If by some act of god the server still has less than 10TPS, then I'm all for a map reset, because at that point it would be clear that this map is royally fucked.
