I've been volunteering since 2017 in Technical Inspection and Cost. I sincerely recommend doing it and giving back to the competition; the students sincerely appreciate the interactions we have on site and it's important to get more former competitors on the other side of the fence.
I also want to explicitly request folks who are experienced with Cost try to volunteer for the event. We are making big changes to the event this year (TBA) and we sincerely need more help from folks who have done a cost report and the real case scenario before. The guy who runs cost is super cool to work with (and is a redditor, hi Steve!) and doing Cost Audit in the past with him has been one of my favorite parts of volunteering all week.
Most of the volunteer positions don't require prior experience; there is a training for tech prior to the event and you'll be set up for success regardless of the position you volunteer for. You are given lunch every day and depending on the event you'll get some apparel too.
