Things You Can Do
- Wash your hands. (Wash them for at least 20 seconds with soap and water. Wash them especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, after touching your face, and after you cough/sneeze.)
- Use hand sanitizer if you can't wash your hands.
- Avoid touching your face, especially nose, mouth, and eyes. (Yes, it's harder than you think.)
- Avoid sick people. (If you're around someone who may be sick, stay 3-6 feet away from them.)
- Stay home if you are sick. (This is to help protect those that are vulnerable to complications.)
- Cover a cough or sneeze with your elbow or a tissue. Dispose of the tissue, then wash your hands.
- Clean and disinfect surfaces and areas, especially high touch areas like doorknobs.
- Call your provider before coming in when sick. (This allows them to plan and help keep you away from others to minimize risk of it spreading.)
- Don't go to the hospital or urgent care unless the severity level of illness would bring you there normally.
- You only need a facemask.
- Get a flu shot. (No, this will not give you immunity to COVID-19, but it will help you avoid or get a weaker case of the flu, which leaves your immune system better off for fighting COVID-19.)
- Listen to instructions given by university, government, and emergency management officials.
- Buy supplies as needed, including prescription and over the counter medications, food, and water.
Additional Notes
- So far, the elderly and people who have underlying medical conditions (or people in both categories) seem to be the most vulnerable to this. Be sure to take extra precautions if you are, if you live with, or if you are often around the elderly, asthmatics, people with heart or lung conditions, people with other underlying medical conditions, or people who may be immunodeficient due to underlying medical issues or treatments.
- If you are asthmatic, have a heart or lung condition, have another underlying health condition, or are immunodeficient due to existing illness or treatment, know your action plan. Have medication on hand, including daily, weekly, or as needed meds and supplies to counteract symptoms like fever, cough, etc. Have information on hand about your existing conditions and medication list. Talk to your doctors as needed. Know what office/location you would call and potentially go to if you get sick. (Note: all of these steps are good ideas for anyone, but especially for more vulnerable or at risk people and those around them.)
REMEMBER: Wash your hands, watch your sources.
