Piston question for fellow SCAR users

I had an issue not ejecting casings automatically. I pulled my SCAR 17S apart and it looks like there was heavy buildup in the piston chamber, on the piston at the chamfer and even on the carburetor itself. After I cleaned everything with a magnifying glass, my piston will only drop into the chamber where the head is even with the top of the cylinder. Should it drop in all the way without effort or does it require some pressure? Really looking for some help here before I fully reassemble!
