Got a question. I’m 19 and I’m starting to pack to move out now. I do not own or possess a gun yet but I am wanting one specifically for home protection

So I’m able to buy a rifle or shotgun since I’m not 21 correct? I don’t think I can purchase a handgun until I’m 21. How does that work like if someone gifts me a handgun then would I be able to keep that in my home? Or should I just stick with a shotgun? Please would love some feedback on what other ppl think or know
