Last night i rewatched Ocean’s Eleven and then watched Ocean’s Twelve for the first time right after. i’ve always loved Ocean’s Eleven. it’s one of my favorite films of all time. Amazing cast, beautiful cinematography, clever script, it all works so amazingly. But, after watching Twelve for the first time, I think it might be better. I wanted to highlight this primarily with Vincent Cassel’s iconic Night Fox Lazer Dance sequence. In case you need a reminder, the Night Fox challenges Ocean and his crew to try and steal a rare egg from a museum while he tries to steal it at the same time. Ocean’s crew ultimately gets caught trying to grab the egg in daylight, and Danny and Tess later learn that the Night Fox had already stolen it a few nights before by dancing his way through the lazer grid. The sequence, which is set to an amazing dance house/edm track, tracks the Night Fox as he ducks, jumps, spins, and flips his way through the lasers as they erratically move around the floor of the great hall. This one sequence captures so much with so little. The way he tracks his way back and forth across the floor, the way the camera follows both his movements and that of the lasers, the way certain moves line up perfectly with the song’s beat, it’s all perfect. Not to mention, the scene caps off with a perfect bit of humor as he clicks his heels together after making it across the floor. All of these elements are present throughout the entire movie, but they are all highlighted perfectly in this short 2 minute sequence. I’ve seen a lot of discourse around this movie, claiming it’s messy and the overall plot and eventual twists don’t actually work, but i think they’re wrong about that. if you aren’t the biggest fan of it yourself, give it a rewatch with this in mind: Sometimes, it’s okay to let the rule of cool win. Prime example, the Night Fox’s Lazer Dance.
