Need some help understanding combat

Hey everyone, looking for some help with combat. I understand the mobility and combos exist but I'm having pretty marked difficulty with combat. I usually find myself having to use potions excessively. I've tried multiple weapons and various strategies, but just can't get it to work. I feel like I'm missing something obvious. Help a guy out?
