How do you save Trail Mode progress/items? Tried it and didn't get to keep anything.

I read about the diamond armlet in the first stage, so I gave it a shot. Anyway, the only way to quit seemed to be die or 'exit to main menu', so I exited. When reloading into my game, however, I did not retain any items or exp.
