Can someone explain the real Cloud and Sephiroth to me?

Played 7R and almost done with the OG. Havent played since I was a kid.
So if sephiroth has been in an ice cube the whole time, is the sephrioth in 7R just another clone? Or just a fever dream?
Also if Cloud is just a failed clone, then who is the little boy Tifa talks to on the water tower and what happened to him?
