BOSS: Kuja (IX)

Difficulties: 160 (Ultimate ) and 200 (Apocalypse)

Mastery Conditions:

• Win with 4 or more party members alive.
• Reduce Kuja's ATK.
• Reduce Kuja's MAG.

Overview:

• No elemental or status vulnerabilities or resistances.
• Kuja uses lots of powerful magic abilities, including Flare, Thundaja, Gravija, Flare Star, Ultima and Gigavolt.
• Reaper's Flash and Reaper's Lightning are his only physical attacks which both deal Lightning-elemental to damage to a single target, or multiple targets respectively.
• Kuja uses Gravija (60% of party's HP) when transitioning from Normal to Weak phase (only once in the whole fight), and uses Ultima (drops entire party's HP to 1, cannot be Blinked) on his second turn after entering Trance Mode.
• Counters with a standard physical attack in the early phases, then counters with Ultimate: Flare Star in his Weak phase, while in Trance mode.

Tips:

• No real status effects here, other than Ultimate: Flare Star likely Sapping party members. Nothing much you can do on this end.
• Flare and Thundaja can be absorbed using Indomitable Blade/Grand Cross. Note that you will still want to use Lightning-elemental resistance to mitigate the damage from his AoE's, which are largely Lightning-elemental.
• Have a heal ready to go off after Gravija and Ultima respectively. Note that Ultima is a NAT ability that reduces a party's HP to 1 - therefore since it doesn't deal damage, it is not affected by Physical/Magic Blink. You can however Blink out of Gravija.
• Both Blinks work well here even if they don't stop Ultima - they will still stop a large majority of Kuja's abilities.
• Ultimate: Flare Star deals piercing magic damage, so the likes of Vaan's Ark Blast or Agrias' Cleansing Strike will come in handy here. Or you can Blink it.
