Mine's EX 3, so YMMV at lower EX levels, but it seems he can just equip Avenger and go.
You'll want a source of pre-emptive breaks, like Obsidian Bracer equipped or Ninja Edge in your party. (Even without that he does about 25% of the boss's health, so you could also potentially make up the difference by actually kitting him out.)
