Chainer Rankings - Jul 20 update

Short summaries

Rico Rodriguez Now that the dust has settled and Gumi seems to have decided on what they want Rico's magnus skill to be, he still remains a somewhat contentious unit. Rico's on demand damage is pretty typical for a top 5 unit, and he does suffer if you can't remove his fire imbue from Let's Roll and want to use a different element. However, it's his magnus skill that makes him so powerful, with the generous 3 uses per combat meaning his actual damage output on trials is outstanding. He's the inverse of Madam Edel; she would perform exceptionally on release on theoretical trials that last over 12 turns, whereas Rico's advantages would quickly vanish once his magnus casts are all gone. Until we actually see 20 turn trials with sensible teams, I don't feel uncomfortable putting Rico at #1.

2BAdam JensenEllyRena Ranging from technically viable to meh, all four of the enhanced collaboration units can deal chain damage, but are either saddled with support kits that tame their output, or are better suited to finishing or foregoing damage altogether.

CG Squall Underwhelming for a new damage dealer. Lone Lion Squall performs well enough on paper, but his low LB damage passives and lack of an active buff mean that his damage drops far more than other units when he has to give up a materia slot for a killer, survivability, ailment resist and what have you. Under perfect conditions, he isn't going to be outstanding regardless.

Seifer Simply not top 5 in a pure damage build. With a 100% evade provoke setup, Seifer is an interesting choice of a tank compared to other popular choices like Kryla. I don't feel like that's really within the scope of these rankings though, nor is it some gamebreaking new option to be frank.

Selphie Mediocre damage overall, doing noticably worse than recent mages. Selphie has a surprisingly diverse and strong support kit for any damage dealer, but ultimately not really strong enough to justify dropping a support for, or using her as a dedicated one. Selphie at least has a powerful niche for dark visions, either stalling for her 99.99x chain unlocks, or dropping a triple Booyaka! on an unsuspecting foe.

Irvine Irvine is clearly better as a finisher, though don't let that stop you from putting up with his annoying 1 hit setup skills and shitty 80% imperils to be rewarded with a mediocre chainer. Yee-haw.

Sterne Not bad for a unit nobody asked for. Sterne doesn't have particularly good burst damage, but his average is respectful; moreso if you can proc his counter consistently, which should be reliable even in fights with a single AoE every turn with maybe Seifer's Coat or Looming Wrath to help.

Kitone The most thrilling feature of this unit is that she has access to both T AT and T SR with no meaningful difference in damage. Kitone isn't bad by any means, but there isn't a whole lot to say about another decent chainer who's worse than non-limited options from a month ago.

Pretty slow month this time. As usual, let me know what you think.
