To make Roy Mustang's Flame Alchemy Work Like a Charm: a Short Guide with Video Demonstration
Post Body

By popular opinion, Roy Mustang is officially the black sheep of the current Full Metal Alchemist banner for various reasons which have been discussed to death now:

  1. Time limited -> Future is doomed by Gummy standard
  2. Fire locked
  3. Problematic LB

Ok, I dont argue with those points because they are indeed true. Nothing new here. End of the story. Close shop. Stay home. Go back to hibernation.

or does it?

NO. Being a sucker for finisher, I refuse to accept such a cool-sprite unit ending up being condemned. Looking at the modifier of Flame Alchemy, I refuse to let such good LB to go to waste.

At the first glance, what is really problematic of this LB is its weird frame: 51-24-36-24-36-35-3-3 (0). Without counting the initial animation delay, this LB lasts for 161 frames. The intervals between the first 6 hits are so long that even with dupe, the chain would break. Even worse, when you somehow manage to support chain Flame Alchemy, the last 2 hits come so fast that they would not cap properly and they are the two hits that count for the most damage. How do we fix this?

The answer is to look for chaining families with hit intervals that are equal or less than 6. For instance, after activating your first Bolting Strike chainer (6 frame interval), if you activate your second Bolting Strike chainer exactly 3 frames later, the intervals between hits will be reduced to 3 so the last two hits from Flame Alchemy wont break the chain. With that in mind, I went to test on different frame intervals. I focused more on manual chaining as if I cant do it manually, I wont bother. The results are as such

Frame interval Rate of success Notable chaining family
6 The number of Fayt Claic had after first Star Ocean banner Bolting Strike, Absolute Mirror of Equity
5 Good Extreme Nova, Absolute Zero, Disorder
4 Moderate Aureole Ray
1-3 Theoretically very good Does not exist

From the table, it is apparent that 5-frame interval is the best to cap Flame Alchemy chain given the rate of success and the chaining families that come with it. Extreme Nova and Absolute Zero contain various top tier Physical and Magical damage dealers in GL. For your easy reference

Chaining Family Notable Units Remarks
Extreme Nova Hyoh, Elena, Mastermind Xon, Aldore King Rain, Kimono Ayaka, Vesvia Activate Flame Alchemy first and let 1-2 first hits fall out of the Extreme Nova chain for greater success in capping the last few hits
Absolute Zero Tsukiko, Operative Zyrus, Christine, Circe, Mediena, Morgana etc. Quad-cast works best and can potentially cap the whole Flame Alchemy
Disorder Fryevia, Aurora Fryevia, Elena, Kurasame etc. T-cast works best but will unlikely cap the whole Flame Alchemy chain

To demonstrate how these units and chaining families work in real scenarios, I have prepared the following video here.

Hope this helps those of you who love Roy Mustang and/or got him doing the step up intentionally or unintentionally.

Note: shout out to my best bud Fayt for always supporting me with his BiS gear for almost everything I asked of him. Love you much!
