Post Body

So I recently stumbled across Square Enix's 4th quarter report, and I thought I'd share what they said in the report.

From what I've gathered, sales are down across the board, and mobile division has been under performing, especially the newer launched titles. As a result, they are limiting the number of new launches for mobile games and focus on marketing them in hopes of increasing player base for newly launched titles. They will be restructuring the development team and personnel, but the changes won't have noticeable effect until 3rd quarter of 2020.

The Q&A further goes in detail, acknowledging that mobiles games are competing for the same pool of customers. They also acknowledge that gacha games need to provide "面白い/fun, 新しい/new, and 何か/something different in order to attract new customers. They also assured that the new changes will not result in lay offs, and personnel will be reallocated.

The Q&A also mentions that they are interested in cooperating with tencent more, as they have strong global presence outside of China also.

So what does this all mean? I think this report confirms a lot of things that were discussed in the Bloomberg aritcle posted by u/Coenl. The Golden Age of Gacha game is over, new games aren't getting traction, and big Gacha game companies like Square Enix are having to adapt. The whole "New, Fun and Something different" slogan also seem to acknowledge that they need to step up their game to produce quality titles moving forward.

If they are releasing less titles and they are not planning to lay off people, it would probably mean that more people are working on bigger projects, and this is probably a good news for upcoming mobiles games like "War of the Visions" which was just announced.

Having said that, I don't know how that is going to affect FFBE, and there is no mention of what they are planning to do with mobile games that are already established. It doesn't sound like the personnel changes will affect FFBE, and if anything I am worried that there is a distinct lack of acknowledgement that they need to improve their service in order to retain their customers.

Anyways, that's what I've got out of it so far. Feel free to discuss, and if any of you can read Japanese and noticed something interesting, feel free to chime in.
