Early Tips for Purgatory Trial: Darkness
Post Body

Now that the terrible 12-Type Takedown trials are behind us, it's time to move into slightly more interesting trial content (depending who you ask). We don't know what Global will officially name these, but they've generally been called "Purgatory - Grace of ELEMENT" in JP, so that's what I'll go with. First in line would be Grace of Darkness. These trials are permanent content.

General Tips

Reminder that this is all based on the JP version. There may be changes when it releases to Global.

This is a multi-wave trial with four bosses. Instead of posting a full stat spread of every boss, I'll just list the basics:

  • Wave 1: Dark Elf -- Human
  • Wave 1: Sol -- Human
  • Wave 2: Behemoth -- Beast
  • Wave 3: Bahamut -- Dragon

Every enemy is immune to all ailments, and has a baseline of 100% resist to every element. Big imperils are useful here. All stats are fully breakable with no passives.

Fight Tips

The Element Field

While you can use any element you want, there's a permament battleground effect of 100% bonus dark amplify to all units (stacks with all player fields and amps), so dark damage dealers will tend to be strongest here. This is not anything related to Tags/Categories, and using a dark imbue on a non-elem unit like 2B will still get full benefit from the permanent dark amp field.

Even if you're going off-element, it can be beneficial to still mix in dark to your damage, because as long as you have dark in your attack, it's getting an extra 100% ( your own amps) as a damage bonus (divided by the amount of elements mixed).

Final reminder that evocation damage is not boosted by amplify field effects. Sorry Riesz.

General Tips

Having a good leader for these trials is recommended to complete all the turn count missions, but I wouldn't be surprised if teams on Global are able to do so without a leader (maybe?). We'll see after release, and I'll definitely be trying it.

A magic tank and mirage is helpful, but there's probably teams that can change that up as well.

There's various status effects used during the trial, and death immunity is recommended on your whole party (technically optional).

First Wave: Dark Elf & Sol

I'm not going to go into exact turn by turn AI (if you want that, u/togeo has an excellent breakdown in the JP Thread ) but I'll give some general tips.

  • Dark Elf uses AoE death on turn 1 and every few rounds after (can resist).
  • Dark Elf mostly uses Dark and Water magic (with sometimes using Fixed Dark/Water that bypasses normal cover).
  • Sol uses mostly Fire and Light magic damage, along with some Non-Elem magic too
  • Sol AoE dispels on turn 3, so recommended to kill him by turn 3 or sooner
  • Uses a powerful fixed cover ignoring magic attack on turn 4 if still alive (can be sealed)

Second Wave: Behemoth

  • Counters magic damage with Meteor (can seal)
  • Uses a lot of physical attacks, some AoE. Mirage recommended.
  • Gains mighty guard on turn 1 (3 turns unremovable def/spr and mit).
  • Mighty Guard re-applied every 5 turns (3 turns active, 2 inactive)
  • Frequently removes all self debuffs (can't be stopped) and AoE dispels the party (can be sealed)
  • Turns without mighty guard up: 1, 5, 6

Third Wave: Bahamut

  • Uses lots of AoE elemental magic w/ -250% imperils
  • Uses some ST physical w/ accuracy
  • Counts down until Megaflare
  • Will AoE dispel the turn before megaflare (can't prevent)
  • Will AoE dispel on other turns too (can't prevent)

Video Examples of the fight from JP

Here's my clear in JP that gets all missions in 4/6/8 turns, for 18 total of the 20 allowed:

  • Cecil -- tank
  • DFina -- buffer
  • Haveh -- breaker / mirage
  • Sephiroth -- capper
  • Dioxus -- chainer
  • Dioxus -- chainer
