Need explanation on EMS/EMT to FDNY Question

I am a little confused on what the differences between an EMT/EMS and the process is for this route.
I got a 98 with my Veterans points so puts my in the 6 thousand list number and a long shot. Been toying with this idea since the list came out and would like a better understanding on what I need to accomplish before the next exams. I have no prior EMS experience besides the basic Combat Casualty Care course given to Infantry Line Units. I am also 31 so I don't know how much room I have with my age.
