Still Necessary To Ask Father's Blessing In Marriage?

The caption. Is it wrong to not do so? Obviously, if it was important to my significant other to receive their parents' blessing, I would respect that.

However, recently I've been thinking it's sketch. Why am I, an adult, asking another adult permission to date an adult? I get that it's tradition and in many cases just a formality. My suspicion though is that this stems historically from daughters being the property of the father. No other explanation makes sense to me.
