How common is pen palling in jail/ prison?

I've written dozens of letters to inmates from the www.writeaprisoner.com site this month and I'm eagerly awaiting their replies (only one so far), but it's made me wonder how common it is inside?

Does everyone do it? What are you hoping for? If you had pen pals was it beneficial? Were there obstacles (getting supplies, being limited on what you can say, etc). Have you seen pen pal 'collectors' or instances of abuse/ manipulation?

Just interested in any insights from the inside. Thanks for taking the time! 📬🙌
