I've made it to the second system and there's a couple of places to buy ships, but they all seem to have forward-mounted weapons. Like even the screen-filling ships have you flying like you're piloting a fighter.
Gunships have an ult which looks like an omni-directional turret but I'm guessing uptime is pretty limited, there also appears to be a class that launches drones but I'm guessing that's more of a carrier playstyle and it's not clear if the drones only fire in a forward arc too.
Do any of the larger or higher level ships have any concept of strafing your enemies and cycling through side-mounted gun batteries?
