I remember a while back some discussion about how a long-term goal in Ethereum was to divorce Ether itself from the chain and consensus code. Basically, have Ether be implemented as an ordinary token contract, and allow gas to be bought and rewards paid with tokens in general rather just Ether.
Given that this whole refund nonsense could have been done on-chain by swapping the address of the "official" Ether token contract for a different one, should abstracting the Ether token from the Ethereum system be a development priority going forward?
