Chapter 15

Ariana said “Good question. Yes Pilot. We will attempt to wake them during our last regeneration cycle. Hopefully, that will give them enough time to be of assistance when we meet the other members of their species. Is there anything else?”

None of them had any more questions, so Ariana said “Pilot Trina I’ll let you say goodbye to your brother before you go to your shift on the Hopper.”

Both Neto and Trina said “Thank you Captain.” Trina hugged Neto and Kwils too and said “Please keep sending me messages, both of you!” Then Trina turned to Ariana and said “Captain, can I discuss something with you in private before I go?”

Ariana said “Sure. Let’s go to my room.”

They went to Ariana’s room and as the door shut Ariana said “Is everything all right?”

Trina smiled and said “Yes, everything is wonderful. I already got a message from Captain Tollen. She is in the convoy and wants to meet me. She says she trusts you and that the meeting is a formality and if I want the position after I meet her, that it’s mine.”

Ariana smiled and said “That is good news. Please send me a message and let me know what you think. Make sure to tell her about your interaction with your Uncle. Don’t keep any secrets like that from her. Captain Tollen will speak with the Admiral and it will all work out, I promise.”

Trina said “Yes ma’am. I will tell her. Thank you so much for the advice.”

Ariana said “Anything else?”

Trina stammered a bit and said “No ma’am.”

Ariana raised an eyebrow and said “Are you sure?”

Trina just said “Ummm…”

They walked out of Ariana’s room and met Kwils and Neto by the airlock to get back into the Hopper’s docking area. The airlock closed and Neto asked “What was that about?”

Ariana said “Trina wanted some advice on getting a position like you have. Apparently your uncle thinks you have a dangerous job, and is worried about both you and Trina doing it.”

Neto said “Why wouldn’t she ask me?”

Ariana said “Well, I have a younger brother too, and the next time I ask him for advice will be the first time I ask him. Lieutenant, does Kory ever ask you for advice?”

Kwils laughed and said “She’s never once asked me.”

Neto laughed along with them and said “I guess you’re right. She would be an amazing Scout Pilot. I hope she can convince Uncle Weldon.”

Ariana said “I’m sure she can. She seems like a smart young officer. Let’s get going and get our guests back home.”

They went to the bridge and they sat in their respective chairs. Ariana said “Lieutenant, detach docking clamps.”

Kwils said “Yes ma’am.”

Then Ariana said “Pilot, take us out to our first jump position.”

Neto said “Yea ma’am,” and he engaged the Fortuna’s engines.

Ariana then opened communications to the Hopper “This is Captain Ariana of the Scout Ship Fortuna, we are moving out to our first jump position.”

Admiral Cansina’s voice came on “Thank you for the update. See you all at our destination.”

Ariana said “Thank you admiral. Fortuna out.”

As they were in flight for about 30 minutes, Neto said “Captain, we have reached the jump point. What are your orders?”

Ariana replied “Pilot, engage FTL drive and take us out.”

Neto said “Yes ma’am”, engaged the engines and the view screen went blank for a few seconds and then normal space appeared. Neto examined his screens and said “Captain, our coordinates are as expected. We’ve made it to the first jump position on our course.”

Ariana replied “Excellent Pilot. Lieutenant what is our engine status?”

Kwils replied “Engine status is normal. Hull temperature is slightly elevated, but still in the normal range. All other gauges read as expected.”

Ariana then said “Also excellent. Pilot I will take the first shift. You are relieved. Go and get some rest and I’ll see you in 6 hours.”

Neto got up and said “Thank you ma'am,” and left the bridge.

Ariana turned to Kwils and said “I will start the scans if you want to get anything from the kitchen.”

Kwils got up and said “Thank you ma'am. Can I bring you back some coffee?”

Ariana said “Thank you Lieutenant. I would like some.”

Kwils came back with two steaming mugs and handed the coffee to Ariana. Ariana said “Thank you Lieutenant. Take a look at the main screen.”

Kwils turned to look intently at the large screen at the front of the bridge. Ariana continued “Notice the two routes displayed. The blue one is our route here from Kranlia, and the one in green is the route we will take now. The first four jumps just take us along the blue route but then we start to diverge. Do you see that?”

Ariana continued “So initially there shouldn’t be much of interest in the scan data, but we still need to be vigilant so we don’t get surprised.”

Ariana went on “Neto’s route will take us another 12 jumps to get to our destination after the routes diverge. Do you have any questions or thoughts?”

Kwils said “Will we come close to any star systems that might be populated?”

Ariana said “That’s a good question. We will not come within 10 light years of any star systems that may have life. The one star that we pass by that will be 10 light years distant generates too much radiation to support any life.”

Kwils said “That’s smart. Any populated system might be too dangerous when we get close to our destination.”

Ariana smiled and said “Exactly. We aren’t exploring on this mission. We just want to safely deliver our guests as fast as possible. It’s so hard to have to wait to wake them up. I’m very excited to meet them.”

Kwils agreed “Yes. I hope they are as nice as they seem in L’karno’s message.”

Ariana said “I hope so too. But, let’s take a look at these scans and then we can take a break for some lunch.”

They went in the kitchen to get lunch. Kwils fixed a small plate of lasagna and Ariana had a small salad and a slice of pizza. As they ate Ariana grinned and asked “What did you think of Cansina?”
