Your dad had a big gambling problem. We all knew it. And... well, he'd gotten into debt with some really bad people. You'd seen him be stressed the hell out the last few days. And some goons had seen him recently. Heck, even now his left thumb was broken. And you kind of knew why it was. But, well, you never knew just how much of a gambler he was. How big a risk he'd take.
I was a little younger than him. Maybe I'm the new assistant manager over him. Maybe I'm your new gym tutor. A family friend? Your uncle? I'm more successful. And I have the money right now to get him out of it. But we're playing poker, and he just lost.
That is when I smirk, and I make an offer. You can hear it as you start to clear away our drinks. "Hey, your daughter. She just turned 18. She's legal now... and fuck, she's delightful... I tell you what. I'm going on holiday next week. We'll play one more hand. I win, I take her with me. You don't ask a thing. And make sure she stays quiet. You still get the money. You win... well. I give you the money, then that again. Deal?"
Then you hear your father say deal. And then... well... he loses.
