Hi I'm a WOP (Work, Organizatioal and Personnel// Industrial psych in the US) student with a full scholarship. I don't want to be here but I'll stay because I'm trapped -- as a scholar should I choose to leave I need to repay back the money they spent on me... And well as a scholar, I don't have that kind of money.
I'm one of those geeks who did a master because I love learning, I took my undergraduate in Psychology because it was cool and interesting. I also enjoyed doing wop related stuff when I was working -- u cant imagine what this master means to me.
It has been a mess. Racism in Italy -- even subtle racism among professors -- We had a class where literally the lectures were for fun (?) Because our final examination were based on pdfs we had to read by ourselves and only maybe half of them were explained by the professor. Professors who spend 1-2 hours complaining about having to speak in English EVERY SESSION. Professors whose teaching method is assign a chapter to groups and let them present and that's the whole course.
And thesis. We literally only had a list of topics to choose from -- not even areas of interest just straight up this is what your thesis will be about. For most of us data has already been collected so we just write the paper (which I know is convenient) but it's very difficult because you don't have context of the study and they grade your submissions as if you do. They made me change my model because they pre tested it and it came out statistically insignificant -- I had a perfectly good reason backwd by literature for why it came out like that but they're not interested.
There's a mobility scheme where somehow you also get a thesis advisor in that new place. So you have 2 advisors -- I have one in Italy and Barcelona. These people don't know each other. My adviser from Barcelona is an economics professor not even under Psychology and in our meeting he literally told me idk anything about the paper I just want to see the statistics. (nice) Sometimes these advisors disagree on what to do about the thesis. Sometimes 1 advisor doesn't even care at all to participate but still gets to grade you.
ALL supervisors are very hard to communicate with, I have a classmate who had to set up a meeting with her adviser 2 weeks before so she can meet him / her and often it'll be just 30 minutss. They just don't reply. literally no one does.
And we've made our concerns known but they just gaslight us and say ah be flexible, understand that the professors are busy, this is really how the research process is.
One of my classmates just dropped out of the master to the surprise of the program LOL and he's very happy about it and I'm really happy for him too but also a bit jealous and sad.
Anyway this can go on forever, I just feel so trapped and frustrated because this program is either lazy or straight up doesn't care -- and I'm trapped in all this.
It's heartbreaking because this has been my dream for so long and now everything seems to be built on pillars of sand.
Disclaimer: I have 1 year left after this semester ends so it might get better -- but based on alumni nope and this is just one person's experience, if you're considering taking this master please still do you due diligence! I am grateful to this program for taking me to Europe but like I said I was here to learn and on that end i feel this master is failing me massively.
