Question about the twins

I just finished re reading eldest and I have two questions about the demise of the twins. The first is why did they not have any wards to protect them as something as the blunt force of Roran’s hammer? Second are they connected in some magical way? When Roran takes down the first twin the second feels pain similar to the way a dragon and rider are connected.
