Ok I want to preface this by saying that I bought this green 17.1 OTTB off Craigslist in Los Angeles for $3200.00 in 2020. I was single (and crazy) and bored, so a project was fun. He has proven himself to be a GORGEOUS and FUN horse, we have had some AMAZING fun together on trails and at some shows. I only want the best life for him. That said, my life has changed A LOT since 2020. I got engaged, I had a baby, I got promoted, and now I am moving to Atlanta, GA. I know the equestrian scene on the east coast is very different than the scene on the west coast - grass, space, XC, more events, etc. I’m wondering- should I ship him across the country or sell him and buy a “made” horse? I can afford a made horse now, but I love my OTTB. He is annoying and refuses sometimes, but he is such a weirdo and is so playful- he is more like a dog than a horse. I know I could buy a more confident horse in Georgia and compete at a higher level, which is attractive to an adrenaline junkie like me. BUT I’m torn bc I would LOVE to see my OTTB turned out in a real pasture on actual grass since he has lived in the city on dirt/ rocky desert. I would love to jump some XC with him and try my hand at 3 day eventing. Anyone have some advice? I also have never shipped a horse, is it dangerous? Obv I would pay a company to do it , but I’m picturing him in a trailer in 105 degree heat for hours… am I wrong? SOMEONE HELP!!

Hi! I actually didn’t realize how controversial this post was until posting and reading replies. In no way was I trying to stir up anything, other than advice from more experienced riders/owners who have shipped horses or made big moves. I know with a lot of small animals, the stress of shipping kills them. I was weighing whether or not shipping my young OTTB was more traumatic for him than just rehoming him. I know there are plenty of good homes for him- even got some offers in my PMs off this post haha! It’s pretty common at my barn for people to buy/sell horses until they find the one that fits. I am glad to hear that shipping horses is not that big of a deal and have decided to ship him to my new home! Just came here to say, not all of us have had the luxury of horse ownership our whole lives. A lot of this info is learned from years of experience. Some of us are new! Research includes asking people on the internet :)
