We're about to bring on about 15 horses as boarders. Our little ranch has a big unused pasture 300 yards east of the barns, turnouts and arenas, and the wind blows out of the west 350 days a year. So flies aren't the main concern.
We can haul daily loads with a dump trailer and pile it in that pasture. Then, a few times a year, get the tractor over there and rake it around and till it under. A morning of work.
Or I can buy a big spreader and spread it every day. That will take the crew a little extra time each day. A big spreader costs big bucks.
We're in Central Coast CA, so it's dry 340 days a year.
What would you choose?
