One of my horses is diabetic and also has an issue with her colon so she is on a low carbohydrate and sugar diet and also can only eat pelleted hay. Because of this she eats all of her food very fast and has become very bored in her stall overnight. She is turned out all day and a few nights a week but because of our turnout setup she can’t be out every night. On the nights that she’s in her stall she’s been eating her poop and drinking tremendous amounts of water.
We’ve talked with the vet and ruled out other reasons and he’s quite certain she’s just eating her poop out of boredom. He suggested looking into enrichment toys/slow feeders to keep her occupied but I’m having a hard time finding anything that doesn’t incorporate hay and also won’t add large amounts of sugar and carbs into her diet.
Happy to DIY something if anyone has ideas or also happy to purchase something, just looking for suggestions!
