Just discovered this quirky little trait after bringing our girls home last month. This is the first time I have fed her so close to the water trough, and she is taking full advantage. Of course I started going down the rabbit hole of what could be wrong with her, and it turns out her previous owner used to soak her hay and it’s become a preference for her. Her teeth have been checked and there aren’t any obvious signs of ulcers.
So now I have a few questions- soon I’ll be feeding them from hay pillows out on our track system. Can I just hose those down quick in the morning and they will be nice and damp for her? She’s 13 and doesn’t really have special needs, and is already getting alfalfa pellet mash 2x/day. She’s really just being bougie 💅🏼. But obviously if she enjoys it that way I would love to be able to give it to her (and my other horses because we live in the desert in Nevada and it’s very dusty)… I’m just slightly concerned about the extra amount of work involved in soaking hay. I guess I am wondering if I can just run the hose on it for a few seconds and call it good, instead of fully immersing it.
