What's the old cowboy wisdom/ weird horse belief that you still hang onto?

We're all always learning and that's part of the joy. But no matter how much I learn there are a few ideas that echo in my brain.
My grandfather always said to bite treats into chunks to avoid choking, but also to put your scent on the treat so the horse will associate you with something good. And firm pats when you first meet a horse so you don't come off as timid.
