Post Body

my cute little 5 y/o and I actually have a really nice bond! he’s amazing and so so good and he runs up to greet me at the gate. HOWEVER, every now and then he won’t let me catch him. he wears a breakaway halter in t/o so it’s easier to grab him sometimes but I really just cannot grasp why sometimes he runs up to me and I can grab him super easily and then sometimes he runs up to me and then won’t let me grab him :/ we don’t work every time I go, sometimes I just bring him in and groom him, use my massage gun until he falls asleep. sometimes we ride. I bring treats with me. he always licks my arm and plays with my clothes. I feel like we have a really good relationship I just don’t get why sometimes he will just not let me catch him

I think the point is not to make the horse think that it can choose to not be caught if you are actively trying to catch it, but to show the horse that not every interaction you have with them is going to be one where you are demanding something from them.

Like think of it this way: You have a coworker who ONLY comes into your office to ask you to help them with some task. You have another coworker who comes into your office to ask you for help, but also they occasionally just pop in because they brought you a coffee/tea/whatever you like and want to chat about something you're interested in briefly. Who are you more excited to see? Who is more of a friend to you?

I think you're taking OP's comment and just running with it wildly out of context. OP isn't saying "accept that a horse may be hard to catch" . They're literally just saying "go hang out with your horse sometimes so you're not asking something of them EVERY time you go out there".

Nobody is saying to let the horse be hard to catch! This entire thread is full of people who own horses. You aren't the only horse owner on this sub.
