Old Mare won't eat hay.

Post Body

Hey everyone, kind of in a weird situation here. About a month ago I purchased a 'mystery mare' the people who we bought her from lied about her being registered/having papers and we didn't know until we had her. Lied about her breeding as well. Bought her thinking she was a registered quarter horse but she ended up being an appaloosa. This doesn't bother me, she's still a great horse. So, at first she seemed to be picky with hay but I thought at first it was because she was a bit stressed out being in a new home.. so I waited a week, she still was picking, barely eating the hay. But she will huff back grain, other than senior feed. I've had the vet out twice, they checked her for ulcers, suspected it was nothing, got her teeth checked and done, and she's still barely eating hay. I've given her so much hay variety to try as well, coarse, fine, hayledge, still she picks and picks. A few months ago we seen this mare at a horse show, she was in beautiful condition and that's what caught my interest, she would eat fine at the show and everything else.. etc... I'm at a bit of a loss, what do you guys think this could be? She is not colic either, she's pooping, and we have given her bandamine. Again, she will eat grain and not hay!! Do you guys think maybe the sellers could be lying about something?.. I really want to keep this mare but I don't know what to do.

She may not physically be able to eat it. Try soaking.
