(I’m new to Reddit, just joined last week. Hi everyone!)
I got scheduled two weeks ago to have laser ablation surgery for the epilepsy I’ve had since 1999.
I just found out my insurance won’t pay for it.
They’re fine with an open resection, where they would have to temporarily remove half my brain since they need to get to the interior of my temporal lobe, and then I have stay in the hospital for at least a week; but not the surgery (that’s FDA approved) where I can go home in three days. It’s apparently experimental, even though they covered it in 2015.
I can appeal, but would still have to wait until next year for any changes (or something like that).
I am sick of waiting. I’ve tried seven medication in the past two decades. I’m have two or three complex partial seizures a week. I just want to do something.
I’ve heard of other cases like this. Have any of you dealt with this? Does anyone know if there is anything I can do?
Update: Ok, I’ve calmed down a bit. I know an open resection is still a pretty common surgery for epilepsy, so I might just go ahead with that. But damn, I would love to still get all over my insurance company for this so I’ll look at some of those suggestions
