Heya, I got diagnosed with epilepsy (JME) in 2017, I was 13 back then. My mom told me when she told my dad that I got diagnosed with epilepsy that he cried. My mom and my brother are the only one in the household where I can talk about epilepsy and also joke about it sometimes. But when we talk about it on the dining table while dinner my dad gets irritated and wants to change the topic. My brother said (because we talked about it several times) that it could be that my dad still can't believe it that I'm suffering from epilepsy and that he can't stand it seeing me while a tonic-clonic seizure. My mom and brother are always telling that they have to yell at my dad while I have a tonic-clonic seizure because he's just standing there, watching in shock. I would like to say to my dad that he maybe should to go a therapy. I'm just worried about him.
What are your thoughts on it?
Some people freeze up in emergencies (fight, flight, or freeze) so it may just be his general response. Not wanting to talk about it is a real issue. If they donβt want to accept it and help you with it, then they need to work on acceptance first.
I hope it gets better.
