Obligatory "on mobile", so sorry for typos.
This actually happened to me yesterday. Cast: Me (Me), EOL (Entitled Old Lady)
Backstory:
I currently live with my disabled mother who I help take care of despite have disabilities of my own. Between the two of us, we both have physical disabilities that make it difficult to walk as well as a few mental disabilities as well (this is relevant for later). This summer so far has been one that has stretched our finances thin as we've both had to go to the hospital numerous times for treatments or surgeries causing our trips to the store to restock on groceries to be few and far between. Because of this, we take the few rare chances to get a few things we need when we can. This was one of those rare chances.
To clarify a bit on my ailments, I have been diagnosed as autistic with high anxiety, among other mental ailments. I also currently have heel spurs in both feet with plantar fasciitis in one foot and Achilles Tendonitis in the other (yes, I am getting treatment for them). I had spent most of the day cleaning our apartment for an inspection, so my feet were severely hurting by the time I went to the store.
Story:
After arriving at the market of walls, I began to look for a handicap cart. Unfortunately, they were out at first, ut I was able to get lucky as one was returned to the opposite entrance from where I came in and the greeter was able to go get it for me. It had taken a few minutes to get, but it was worth the wait.
As I made my way through the store, I made it a priority to get some of the bigger, heavier stuff I was needing before going for the light, squishy stuff like bread. So there I am, with a basket full of stuff rolling through the produce section, when this Entitled Old Lady approached me.
EOL: Excuse me, are you almost done with that cart?
Me: (after taking a moment to process the question) No, ma'am, I still have stuff I need to get.
EOL: Oh, well my husband really needs one, but it there aren't any available.
Me: Well, I'm sorry, but I had to wait a few minutes to get one myself. If I didn't have to use one, I wouldn't, but despite appearances, I do. They never seem have enough available.
EOL: Okay.
I started to continue with my shopping when....
EOL: It's just that, with this hurricane on the way, we need to get some supplies like water and such.......
She continued talking for a few minutes before I finally had to stop her.
Me: Ma'am, I'm sorry there wasn't a cart available for your husband to use, but this is my first time being able to get groceries in about two months. I have a few other things I need to get before I'm done with this cart, but hopefully the employees can find one for your husband soon.
With that, I didn't wait for her to respond as I continued with shopping (part of it was I was getting dinner for the night). I didn't hear anything more from her while I was in the store, but I was able to finish my shopping.
For the record, I live in the Southern US where it is what we call Hurricane Season. As I'm writing this, there is a Tropical Depression about to enter the Gulf of Mexico that is predicted to hit the Louisiana in a couple of days. Early predictions said it might hit closer to where I currently live, hence the panic shopping of many in the store. Last report showed the predicted path having shifted more to the East away from here, but it's too soon to say for sure where it will go.
