Bit of info to help better explain, I use to work for a 3rd party mobile company as a manager in Target selling Carrier phones, prepaid phones, and TV services. During the beginning of the quarantine my company told all the employees that them and Target have come up with the policy that we are not allowed to handle prepaid customers phones just to help halt the spread which I was annoyed with but managed.
For the next couple of months I would have to tell prepaid customers this policy and show them the sign which surpisingly had a positive reception with the occasional annoyance but that was to be expected.
Now let's get to the main story. I was working the morning shift helping where I can when I get a old man in a electric cart approaching me. I turn towards him to give him my full attention.
(here are some names to make things easier. Old entitled man= OEM, target manager= TM, and me for me)
Me: hello sir! What brings you into the store today?
OEM: I need you to activate a phone for me.
Me: sure sir! What company do you use
OEM: it's "prepaid company"
I do the classic "follow me and I'll show you options", I start showing him some of the options we sell where he cuts me off.
OEM: No no no I need a phone I have activated.
I look at him and get ready to recite the policy change
Me: sorry sir but due to what's been going on in the world I have been told by my company and Target to not handle customer provided phones for any prepaid.
I do this as I hold up the sign to show that it's in writing.
OEM reaches into his pockets grabs out two dirty phones and tries to hand them to me.
OEM: This is your job so you need to do this.
I again hold up the sign
Me: I'm sorry sir but I'm told not to do so
He reads the sign and tries to hand me the phones again
OEM: well "prepaid company" isn't a prepaid company so you are just refusing to do your job
I sigh and point towards the prepaid companies sign where in bold letters said "best prepaid company"
Me: sir they are one and again I can't help, if you buy a new phone I can help but I can not and will not touch your phones
He starts sighing in anger and squints his eyes to read my name tag
OEM: Well OP I want you to get the manager because you obviously don't know your job and I don't like how you're treating me.
I look at him with a surprised look on my face because I'm confused on how I'm treating him any differently than any other
Me: well sir I am the manager and I've been doing this job for 3 years
OEM: then I want to talk to your manager and tell him how you're refusing to help
At this time my manager was on vacation so I didn't feel like bothering him
Me: sir my manager isn't accepting calls and even then I know he will recite everything I'm telling you.
After that he just growled at me and sped off with his scooter because he knew he wasn't going to get any farther with me.
I thought it was over and went back to helping others, after about 10 minutes I hear "Now make him help me"
I looked toward the noise and see him and one of the Target managers approaching me, now this manager was very cool with me and my team and knew that I didn't do anything unless I had good reason.
TM: OP what's going on and why won't you help this guy out?
So I go on explaining the situation and pointing out that I pointed at the signs and showed her the sign stating what company he was dealing with. She looks back at him
TM: Ok well sir it looks like due to the policy we can't really help you, like OP said he could either help you by telling you how to activate your phone or you could buy a new one.
OEM: That's bull crap, this Son of a Gun (his actual words) is just a lazy piece of crap and refuses to help me. That's his job and if he isn't doing his job then why pay him?
Me: Woooww thanks sir for telling me what my job is
I started clapping while TM just shssed me
TM: sir please don't use that language, our policies changed and OP here has been one of our best mobile reps. Now the policy states he can't help you with your prepaid phone so our hands are tied
OEM: "prepaid company" isn't prepaid, you both don't know what you're talking about. Learn how to do your job
Me: sir I already showed you that it is now if you're not happy then leave, I can't help you
The man huff yells Son of a Gun at me and drives off
TM: OP you OK?
Me holding my heart pretend crying: oh I don't know if my delicate heart can take it
A moment of silence passes and we both burst into laughter, as we calm down we both discuss on how the mobile department is doing this month and going over inventory when we see our good old friend OEM coming back.... Again.
OEM: another thing, I'm your elder and a paying customer so you have to respect me, so you need to do........
TM gets angry and interupts: Sir leave the store now, we can't help you and you are harassing associates. So leave now or we will escorts you out.
The OEM in a fit of rage again screams Son of a Gun (which is his favorite phrase) and drives off to the exit.
I was so traumatized by the situation that I had to update my nametag to state my newly earned title so customers can understand who they are dealing with.
