Entitled guy on writing subreddit got all pissy because I wouldn't write my book the way he thinks is best.

Post Body

I am currently writing a slasher novel, about a fundamentalist Christian serial killer who kills people he deems sinners. One of the two main protagonists of the book (along with her girlfriend Ella) is Liv, a popular girl who is a closeted lesbian, and yearns to be away from the town's judgement. The reveal of the book is that her brother Peter, a Christian online influencer, is the killer.

What do you know, when discussing ideas with fellow writers on a writing sub, some guy butted in and said that I should change it so that Liv is the killer, because it's "more realistic that way." Ok, I don't even know what that is supposed to mean, and when I pointed out why that wouldn't make any sense for multiple reasons (ie, the killer clearly being shown to be a man), he claimed to know more about the characters I am writing than I am, saying "she obviously has some sort of religious affiliation. Maybe she is closeted out of shame, and she really wants to convert to being straight. I think it would be more fitting with her character." No, that is not at all what her character is. She wants to be free to be herself, but is afraid of her family's judgement, and is without a doubt the nicest character in the book, who wouldn't hurt a fly. And for the record, all I had said about her character prior to my argument with him was that she was a lesbian and was still closeted. If you get "likely to be a killer" from that, then you have some serious homophobic ideas. Just saying.

And of course, when I pointed this all out, he said "Ok, but when people think your book is terrible, don’t act like I never tried to help you." Oh, fuck you. I guess Lord of The Rings is terrible too, huh? That also doesn't have a lesbian as a serial killer. If you want a story like that, write your own! Don't tell me my book is terrible because it's not the way you think it should be!
